In an era when women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law, and business, women still make up only 14% of engineers in the United States. Studies show that this is due to a number of factors including implicit biases about women in STEM and unconscious barriers in STEM education. Thus, the purpose of codeHERS is to help break the gender gap in STEM providing girls with engineering career exploration, mentorship, and technical workshops -- catalyzing change in engineering.
STEM Career Exploration Series
We bring in female engineers working at top tech companies and startups as well as current engineering students to talk about their experiences as a women in STEM and inspire students through their job and stories.
Engineering Mentorship Program
In our mentorship program, we pair students with female engineers in industry and university to introduce them to the STEM field and provide them with advice and support on their engineering journey. We currently have mentors from UC Irvine, Stanford, and Microsoft.
We offer a variety of STEM workshops throughout the year to introduce girls to STEM and help build their programming skills. This year we plan to offer an App building workshop using Android studio and a mini Hackathon. We have already hosted HTML Website building and Raspberry Pi Workshops.
